He finally has his first sexual experience, fellating a soldier on a secluded beach: “this was the realest moment of his life.” Even if we accept that, Galgut’s focus on Morgan’s sexual needs is reductive. Morgan works for the Red Cross in Alexandria, visiting hospitalized soldiers. Another opportunity to travel arises in 1915. Aside from his reunion with Masood, his first visit to India introduces Morgan to its religious and caste divisions and its frequently obnoxious British rulers it also sows the first seeds of A Passage to India, written years later. “Friendship is your Empire, Morgan,” declared the anti-imperialist Indian. While Masood gently rejected Morgan’s advances, the friendship blossomed. In England some years before, he became friends with Masood, an aristocratic young Muslim Indian. His four published novels have examined heterosexual relationships his gay novel, Maurice, will be published posthumously. He’s a timid mama’s boy, a closeted gay man, still a virgin at 33. A British army officer tells him of his many sexual conquests of Indian men and boys Morgan finds this titillating. Morgan, as he is known, is on a vessel steaming toward India in 1912. Forster, Galgut (In a Strange Room, 2010, etc.) focuses on the novelist’s visits to India, his time in Egypt and his homoerotic yearnings.

"Anthology of Spoon River AIDS Walk" & "One Hundred Kisses" I have chosen 10 short stories and believe me, that was not an easy task this year! Here they are, in no particular order: All collections are highly recommended in their entirety. Additionally, the setting and atmosphere, as well as the well incorporated historical facts and details are a big plus to this beautiful m/m romance trilogy.įAVORITE SHORT WORKS: My favorite short works are all chosen from single author collections and anthologies read and reviewed during 2014. The slow building romance filled with sexual tension, sensuality, and both inner and outer conflicts make the final outcome worth the journey. The Enlightenment trilogy by Joanna Chambers is a late addition to my list of favorites as it was read in December, but it is a fabulous addition. With every turn of the page Browne invites the reader to engage in the text, the images, and the “voices” in his postmodern masterpiece. Children as well as adults can learn a great deal from this book about art, imagery, storytelling, parenting, and the pitfalls of a society obsessed with socioeconomic status. It has resonance beyond any children’s picture book I have read, and I believe it should be shared and discussed in every classroom. Prior to reading it, I had never heard of the title or the author, although I have been fascinated by children’s literature for many years. When I first picked up Voices in the Park by Anthony Browne, I was unaware of the impact this book would have on me. In The Pull of the Stars, Emma Donoghue once again finds the light in the darkness in this new classic of hope and survival against all odds. With tireless tenderness and humanity, carers and mothers alike somehow do their impossible work. It’s suspenseful, exhilarating, and heartbreaking in equal measure. They lose patients to this baffling pandemic, but they also shepherd new life into a fearful world. The Pull of the Stars A Novel Emma Donoghue Almost all of the action in this historical novel takes place in one room over three days: a hospital ward for pregnant women afflicted with the Spanish flu in 1918 Dublin. In the darkness and intensity of this tiny ward, over three days, these women change each other's lives in unexpected ways. Into Julia's regimented world step two outsiderz-Doctor Kathleen Lynn, a rumoured Rebel on the run from the police, and a young volunteer helper, Bridie Sweeney. In an Ireland doubly ravaged by war and disease, Nurse Julia Power works at an understaffed hospital in the city center, where expectant mothers who have come down with the terrible new Flu are quarantined together. In Dublin, 1918, a maternity ward at the height of the Great Flu is a small world of work, risk, death, and unlooked-for love. Those moments we sat and drew were truly an anchor in my pursuit to becoming an artist and illustrator. My brothers were all incredibly talented at drawing so I was super fortunate to have them as inspiration. Being the youngest of 8, I got to see and pick up on a lot of the things my older siblings did one of which was drawing. I’m Ka Lee, a Hmong American artist, designer and illustrator from Madison, Wisconsin. I grew up watching Saturday morning cartoons with my siblings and after hours of watching TV we’d also draw together. Hi Ka! Tell us about yourself - how did you get to where you are today? What sparked your interest in design? From bright, vibrant pieces to vector-heavy graphics with a hand-drawn style, Ka’s work often meshes culture with his love of design. Ka Lee is a Hmong artist, designer, illustrator and art director based in Madison, Wisconsin. It’s difficult to think clearly about someone who shaped the very way you think, as her work - Earthsea first, most, always - has done for me. Among them are some of my favorite books ever written, and ones I will read again and again until I can read no longer. Somewhere near the top of that list is the work of American science fiction and fantasy author Ursula K Le Guin, who died in 2018, leaving behind over 20 novels, seven essay collections, a dozen books of poetry, and more than 100 short stories. Recently, I was telling a friend that there’s a list of things I’ll probably never write about because I love them in a way that does not abide critical distance, which doesn’t really make for interesting writing. Now the publisher minedition has brought it back and what a beauty it is. Originally released in America in 1995 by North-South books, the book has long been out-of-print. How thrilled I was then to discover the republication of Wilhelm Hauff and Lisbeth Zwerger’s Dwarf Nose. Obscure European fairytales, however, are rare beasts. Generally speaking they do a very good job of bringing world folktales to the American marketplace. A great gaping hole exists, and into it the smaller publishers of the world have sought to fulfill this need. Folktales and fairytales are widely viewed by book publishers as a dying breed. Thirty or forty years ago you’d sometimes see these books given a life of their own front and center with imaginative picture book retellings. But for every Cinderella or Sleeping Beauty you run into, there’s a Tatterhood or Riquet with the Tuft lurking on the sidelines. There is a perception out there that there are only so many fairytales out there that people really need to know. It seems so funny to me that for all that our culture loves and adores fairytales, scant attention is paid to the ones that can rightfully be called both awesome and obscure. |
